Rafael Roa is a visual storyteller and film-maker born in 1993 in Bogotá, Colombia.

Memory, both collective and intimate, has always been a key aspect of his work.

Rafael worked for the “Comisión de la Verdad”, gathering and documenting testimonies of violence in the context of the 2016 Colombian peace deal. He also worked as a freelance photographer in Cali, Colombia.

In 2023, Rafael was a laureate of the Sound Documentary Intensive Summer Programme from the ENS Louis Lumière in Paris.

Rafael was the photographer for the non-fiction book L’absence est une femme aux cheveux noirs, published in 2024 by Éditions du sous-sol. This book, in collaboration with French writer Emilienne Malfatto, retraces the memory of the last Argentinian dictatorship and what remains of it in today’s Argentina.

Rafael is currently working on a photographic and written long-term personal project about the memory of peasants and violence in the Magdalena Medio, Colombia.

He works between France and Colombia and is available for assignments.
